There is no power outside your own consciousness. That which you assume to be true becomes your reality. This, in essence, is the Law of Assumption —a cornerstone teaching of Neville Goddard, the 20th-century mystic and teacher whose words have quietly guided countless souls toward a transformed life.
To the modern reader, the Law of Assumption may sound simple. Too simple. But like all true spiritual laws, its power lies in its simplicity and in its daring demand: Believe that what you want is already yours.
The Foundation: Consciousness is the Only Reality

Neville taught that consciousness is not merely a witness to reality—it is the creator of it. Your world is yourself pushed out. Everything you experience on the outside is a mirror reflecting your inner assumptions. As he often said, “Man moves in a world that is nothing more than his own consciousness objectified.”
There is no one to change but self. Not by force, not by manipulation of outer things, but by assuming the state of the wish fulfilled.
What Is an Assumption?

An assumption, in Neville’s teaching, is not idle wishing. It is a living belief, a felt truth, a conviction so deep that it impresses itself upon the subconscious. And the subconscious, being impersonal and creative, takes that assumption and brings it forth into physical experience.
To assume something is to accept it inwardly as true, regardless of what the senses say. Neville wrote, “Dare to believe in the reality of your assumption and watch the world play its part relative to its fulfillment.”
Living in the End
The Law of Assumption requires that you mentally dwell in the end state of your desire. You do not beg, you do not wait, you do not look for signs. You assume it is already done.
If you desire love, you must assume you are already loved. If you desire abundance, you must assume you are already prosperous. You think from the state, not of the state.

Neville illustrated this through vivid imagery. If you were already the person you wanted to be, how would you feel? What would you see? Who would be in your life? Enter into that scene in imagination and make it real.
“Imagination,” he said, “is the only redemptive power in the universe.”
Impression on the Subconscious

The subconscious does not argue. It accepts the beliefs impressed upon it through feeling. This is why Neville emphasized feeling is the secret. A thought with no emotional charge fades away. But a thought felt deeply—especially in a drowsy, receptive state like before sleep—can rewire the very fabric of your reality.
So how do you impress an assumption onto the subconscious? By persistently imagining the end state and feeling it as real, night after night, until it becomes your dwelling place.
Persistence Is the Key

Many falter because they assume once and then wait. But Neville urged: persist. Even when the 3D world shows nothing, hold fast to the assumption. “Let the outer world reflect your inner conviction,” he would say.
Do not water the seeds of doubt. Do not look to the world to confirm the change. Look only within. Feel only from the state of the wish fulfilled.
Examples of the Law in Action
Neville told many stories—from his own life and his students’—about the Law of Assumption at work:

- A man imagined receiving a letter of good news, and days later, it arrived.
- A woman assumed a relationship was healed, and harmony returned without any outward effort.
- Neville himself imagined being honorably discharged from the army, and it happened exactly as he saw it in a dreamlike vision.
These were not mere coincidences. They were results born from a consciousness that dared to assume its desire already fulfilled.
How to Begin

- Choose your desire. Be specific, but not obsessive. Know what you want.
- Create a simple scene. One that implies your wish has already been fulfilled.
- Enter the scene in imagination. Feel it vividly. Hear the voices. See the details.
- Repeat nightly. Ideally in a drowsy state before sleep, when the subconscious is most receptive.
- Live your day “from” that state. Walk as though it is already yours. Do not contradict your assumption.
Q&A: Understanding the Law of Assumption
Q1: Is the Law of Assumption the same as the Law of Attraction?
Not quite. The Law of Attraction focuses on “like attracts like,” while the Law of Assumption goes deeper — it says you don’t attract what you want; you attract what you assume to be true. It’s not about drawing something to you, but becoming the state of having it.
Q2: What if my current reality contradicts my assumption?
That’s normal — it’s simply the old belief still echoing. Neville taught to “ignore the evidence of the senses.” Your outer world takes time to reflect inner change. Stay loyal to the unseen reality until it solidifies into fact.

Q3: How do I know if I’m assuming correctly?
You’ll feel it. True assumption carries a quiet confidence — not anxious hoping. When your inner conversation shifts naturally to “of course it’s done,” you’re dwelling in the state of the wish fulfilled.
Q4: How often should I practice assuming?
Persistence is the secret. Neville recommended imagining the fulfilled desire nightly, especially before sleep, when your mind is most receptive. The more consistently you assume, the faster it takes root in the subconscious.
Q5: What if doubt creeps in?
Doubt is just another assumption — the assumption that it’s not working. Instead of fighting it, gently return to your chosen scene. Revisit the feeling of your wish fulfilled until it feels real again. Over time, your faith will outweigh doubt.
Final Thoughts: The Courage to Assume

The Law of Assumption is not for the faint of heart. It requires spiritual maturity, discipline, and a willingness to trust the unseen over the seen. But for those who dare to assume, a new world opens.
You are always assuming something—why not assume the best?
“Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled and continue feeling it until that which you feel becomes your reality.” — Neville Goddard
